 20 songs. Five dates. Three states. Two continents. One band.
17 years, 11 records and an infinite amount of asses kicked. Those sentiments about sum up the career of Maryland’s legendary rock outfit Clutch. It’s surprising that their latest, Full Fathom Five, is their first live DVD effort of their long and storied career.
Full Fathom Five isn’t just a live DVD by any means. It also comes with a live CD of the same shows, and truly is an out and out opus from the band we thought gave us everything they had in the tank.
The DVD spans locations and venues across the country, from Mr. Smalls Theater in Pittsburgh, PA and the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ to the Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO. The DVD also takes us to down under to the Hi-Fi in Sydney, Australia.
The DVD spans a few years as well, ranging from dates in 2007 all the way until as recent as March of 2008.
All of Clutch’s best songs are represented, including new single, Texan Book of the Dead. Just sit back and think of everything that you would want to hear, The Devil and Me, 10001110101, Burning Beard, Animal Farm, The Mob Goes Wild, Electric Worry and One Eyen Dollar. 20 songs in total make up the DVD and the record.
Full Fathom Five encapsulates everything it is to witness Clutch in a live atmosphere. The crashing crescendos, the powerful guitars, definitive vocals and thunderous drumming; it all adds up to what Clutch can do. The DVD displays the raw energy and passion of Clutch live and it is easy to see, only a few songs in, just why these East Coast boys have stayed as popular and relevant as they have.
If Clutch decided to wait almost two decades before releasing a live DVD, then you know it figures to be good, and Full Fathom Five does not disappoint. And the less than subtle Shakespeare reference (The Tempest), score points for the boys, at least in this critics eyes.
