“Public Enemies” Brings Hollywood to Washington

This summer, the National Museum of Crime and Punishment (NMCP) is uniting Hollywood and history once more. In cooperation with Universal Pictures and local radio station Mix 107.3, the museum will host a movie pre-screening and celebration Tuesday, June 30th, for the upcoming Johnny Depp thriller “Public Enemies.” The film, scheduled to open nationwide on July 1st, is based on the true story and criminal life of John Dillinger, an infamous bank robber and gangster during the “Public Enemy” era. Dillinger will be played by Johnny Depp with Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard and Channing Tatum in supporting roles.

Preceding the film screening at 5:00 PM, the public is invited to a special celebration inside the museum where they can try their best in Dillinger trivia to win tickets to the pre-screening that evening. These lucky winners at the museum will then head to Regal Gallery Place for a 7:30pm movie time. People that have already secured tickets to the pre-screening are also invited to a sneak preview of the Dillinger exhibit, which includes several props used in the film, at no cost.

“We have always been fortunate to have such a broad range of artifacts inside our museum, but this is the first time that we’ve worked with a studio to display props from a movie before it was released in theaters. I think it adds something new for our guests; they can see a movie in the theaters one day and come here to see the props the following day!” said Janine Vaccarello, Chief Operating Officer of the National Museum of Crime & Punishment.

Beyond the evening celebration, the museum will dedicate their temporary exhibit space to Dillinger, displaying a unique mix of historical artifacts and props used in the Hollywood blockbuster. These artifacts will go on display today and will remain in the museum until September 1st. Most prominently featured is Dillinger’s famous Ford Essex Terraplane 8.

Other artifacts in the exhibit include:

· The keys, hub cap and vanity mirror to Dillinger's 1933 Hudson Essex-Terraplane 8.
· A brick from the First National Bank in Mason City, Iowa where Dillinger was wounded while robbing the bank of $52,000 on March 13, 1934.
· A brick from the Biograph Theater in Chicago where Dillinger was killed.
· A spent bullet that was fired from a Thompson machine gun that Dillinger and Pierpont stole from the Peru, Indiana police station in October of 1933.
· The original “Wanted” poster issued on June 1, 1934 offering $5,000 for Dillinger.
· A piece of kitchen door and light switch plate taken from Crown Point Indiana Jail where Dillinger escaped from on March 3, 1934.
· A framed photo of Dillinger and his girlfriend along with their tickets to the 1933 World's Fair.
· A collection of items belonging to Evelyn “Billie” Freschette, Dillinger’s girlfriend.
· A cream jug and saucer from the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish, Wisconsin where Dillinger had his first encounter with the FBI.
· A pistol, rifle, and money bags used in the upcoming film, “Public Enemies.”
