Wedding Guest Books: 5 Ideas to Remember Guests

Guest BookWhen your guests walk into the wedding, one of the first things they’ll do is sign the guest book. The purpose of the guest book is to record all of the guests in attendance who witness the vows of the couple. Some guests may include congratulatory messages along with their signatures. A guest book is a great way to remember who was at your wedding and to reread their well wishes for your marriage in the years that follow.

The traditional guest book is a small book, about 5 by 7 inches in size, maybe a little bigger, and contains lined pages for guests’ signatures. One down side to this style of guest book is it isn’t something you’ll leave sitting out for viewing, so here are some other ideas for recording your guests that are incorporated into a more personal memory keeper.

Have a guest book attendant standing by whichever type of guest book you choose to encourage guests to sign and share with guests any special requests that are part of the personalization process.

Memory Book
A memory book is a pre-printed book where each page has you fill in specific wedding memories including lined pages set aside for recording wedding guests. Have the memory book set out at the wedding for your guests to sign their names. Room, however, is limited for guests to write messages to the couple.

Photo Book
Create a digital photo book with pictures of the bride and groom. If pictures are limited on each page to only one or two with the majority of the page left blank for signatures and messages, there will be plenty of room for guests to write any length of a message they wish. Or place the picture on the left page and leave the right page blank for guests to sign on. This guest book will then double as a photo album to be set out after the wedding for viewing.

For a twist, be creative with colors in your photo book. Create a photo book with black pages and have the guests sign using a silver pen. There is a caution here to use a fast-drying silver pen so the ink does not smear. Another idea is to have available different colored pens so guests can also include their choice of color in their message. Or instead of a black pen, have guests sign using a red pen, the color of love. If you use a colored page like a pale blue, have your guests sign the book in a navy blue ink color. Another idea is to use your wedding colors in the page and pen colors. Make sure that the color of ink you choose will be visible on a colored page. Typically, use light ink on dark pages and dark ink on light pages.

Video Messages
Have a videographer ask each guest to give a message to the couple. Set up a small area at the reception site and personalize the background where they’ll stand speaking into the camera. The positive side of this is the couple gets to see each of their guests as they express their well wishes. The negative side is shy guests may avoid or feel nervous about being videoed.

Picture Matte
The idea of the picture matte is to have your guests write their names and messages on a matte that will be used to frame a picture of the bride and groom. Use a white or light colored matte, or try a black matte with a silver pen for signing on it. The couple might frame their engagement picture or a picture of them taken at their wedding. When the picture is framed with the signed matte, they’ll have a memory of their guests hanging on a wall in their home reminding them of everyone who came and celebrated their marriage with them.

Loose Scrapbook Pages
Scrapbookers can combine their hobby with their wedding memories by setting out some loose scrapbook pages for guests to sign on. The pages will then be placed in the couple’s wedding scrapbook. Request your guest book attendant to monitor the pages that when one side fills up, to flip the page over.

An idea for scrapbook pages that will have guest signatures and messages is to have the pages loosely filled. Ask your guest book attendant to flip over pages when they’re half filled and put out new pages when more are needed. Guest book attendants could explain to guests to write their message spaced away from other messages because pictures will be added to the pages later. Then ask a close friend to take pictures of guests during the wedding and reception and later place those pictures next to their signatures and messages on the scrapbook pages.
