September 2008: Metallica By Brian Campbell |
| |
I have been waiting for this moment. Not only to write this article, but also for a new Metallica album. I’m not sure that the music world will be paying much attention to many other releases in the month of September as Metallica’s new opus, Death Magnetic, is set to hit shelves September 16.
People are leery of this record, this writer included. Their last effort, St. Anger, was a departure of sorts when it was hailed as a renaissance for the boys. The sound was semi-off-putting and none of the songs seemed to stick in the long run, and Death Magnetic is supposed to come in and be the cleaner for that record. It is supposed to be so good that we will all forget about St. Anger.
That remains to be seen.
Regardless, six songs have been released and they are good. Drummer Lars Ulrich says that “after Kill ‘Em All, we needed to go in a different direction. We thought that we couldn’t make that kind of music anymore and still be creative as a band.”
Again, that remains to be seen.
Death Magnetic is highly anticipated, and there is no doubt about that. And it may perhaps be one of the most anticipated of 2008. In the eyes of a lot of fans the guys have some work to do to make up for lost ground. From what this critic has heard they might be well on their way to capturing the essence of their sound of yesteryear.
The Bay Area boys will begin their touring in effort of Death Magnetic overseas. Berlin and London get the honors before the guys come back stateside and begin their North America leg of their tour. They will be on tour until well into next year in support of the brand new record.
If you haven’t already, make sure you do it right now and take the time check out their MySpace (yes, even Metallica has a MySpace page) to preview new songs from Death Magnetic, www.myspace.com/metallica.
