In 1965
Rumors of a Who break up spread because singer Roger Daltrey stormed off the stage during a concert at the Glad Rags Ball in London. He left because he was angry about persistent PA problems.
In 1966
The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On" hit number one on the pop singles chart.
Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood" hit number one on the Billboard R&B chart.
The Lovin' Spoonful's "Rain on the Roof" peaked at number ten on the pop singles chart.
Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" broke into the Top 40.
In 1968
Cream played its last concert. The show was at London's Royal Albert Hall.
In 1970
James Brown married Deidre Yvonne Jenkins in a ceremony on the front porch of her home in Barnwell, South Carolina.
In 1975
J. Geils Band played a concert in Detroit which would become part of the group's live album "Blow Your Face Out."
In 1976
New single releases included George Harrison's "This Song" and Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son."
In 1977
Bob Welch's "Sentimental Lady" broke into the Top 40.
Steely Dan released the single "Peg."
In 1979
Chuck Berry was released from a California prison after serving a hundred days for tax evasion.
In 1983
The Rolling Stones' "Undercover of the Night" broke into the Top 40.
In 1984
Don Henley released the album "Building the Perfect Beast."
In 1986
Billy Joel donated royalties from his hit "You're Only Human" to the National Committee on Youth Suicide Prevention.
In 1991
The Rolling Stones signed a deal with Virgin Records.
The Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble album "Live At the El Mocambo - 1983" was released.
In 1995
Part One of The Beatles' documentary "The Beatles Anthology" aired on ABC. It included the debut of the song "Free As A Bird."
In 1997
Paul McCartney's classical piece "Standing Stone" had its U.S. debut, as St. Luke's Orchestra performed the opus at Carnegie Hall.
In 2002
Smokey Robinson was honored at the 17th annual Governors' Awards for the Arts & Culture in Dearborn, Michigan.
Queen's Brian May received an honorary doctorate of science from Hertfordshire University in England. Before he joined Queen, May had been studying astronomy.
A number of items from John Lennon, including the lyrics to the 1974 song "Steel and Glass" and a drawing he'd done when he was trying to quit smoking, were auctioned off by Cooper Owen.
George Harrison's album "Brainwashed" was released.
In 2003
The Beatles placed four albums in the top ten of "Rolling Stone" magazine's poll of the 500 Greatest Albums. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" took the top spot, while "Revolver" came in at number three, "Rubber Soul" placed at number five, and the band's self-titled "White Album" rounded out the top ten. Albums from the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, and the Rolling Stones also made the top ten.
California authorities issued an arrest warrant for Michael Jackson on child molestation charges.
In 2004
Producer, songwriter, and performer Terry Melcher died at his home in Beverly Hills following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 62. Melcher was a key figure in the development of the southern California rock scene in the 1960s, and worked with such artists as The Byrds, the Mamas and the Papas, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Taj Mahal, Gram Parsons, and Glen Campbell.
Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" was named the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Song of All Time by "Rolling Stone" magazine.
In 2005
Gary Glitter was arrested in Vietnam and authorities filed child molestation charges against him.
Carly Simon launched her first tour in more than a decade with a show in Boston.
In 2007
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed in Boston, in what was keyboardist Danny Federici's last show with the group before undergoing treatment for cancer.
Former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artemus Pyle spent the night in a Florida jail because state records indicated he hadn't adequately registered as a sex offender. He denied the allegations, claiming the police, quote, "got it wrong." Pyle's sex offender status stemmed from a guilty plea in 1993 to charges relating to sexual misconduct with a minor.
Queen's Brian May was named chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University, making him the ceremonial head of the school. A few months earlier the guitarist earned his PhD in astrophysics.
Paul McCartney contributed a statement that was read during a demonstration against the closing of a Liverpool-area post office that was near one of his UK homes. In his remarks the former Beatle called the facility, quote, "a vital part of community life" which he believes, "should be saved for future generations to cherish."
The Reverend Al Sharpton continued the late James Brown's tradition of giving away turkeys for Thanksgiving in Augusta, Georgia.< |
